Worked example

Born on June 12, 1994, and checking your age on September 2, 2026: that's32 years, 2 months, and 21 days old, or 11,770 total days. Your next birthday falls on June 12, 2027.

Common mistakes

  • Simple year subtraction. Subtracting birth year from the current year ignores whether your birthday has happened yet this year, which can overstate your age by one.
  • Averaging days per year. Dividing total days lived by 365.25 approximates age but won't match the calendar-accurate years/months/days breakdown used on legal documents.
  • Leap-day birthdays. If you were born on February 29, most calculations treat February 28 as your birthday in non-leap years.

How do you calculate age from date of birth?+

We compare your birth date to today (or any date you choose) and count full years, then full months, then remaining days — the same way you'd count on a calendar by hand. This avoids the rounding errors you get from simply dividing total days by 365.

Why does dividing days by 365.25 give a different age?+

That method approximates leap years but doesn't match calendar reality — real months have different lengths, and your birthday either has or hasn't happened yet this year. Calendar-based counting (years, then months, then days) is the method used on official documents.

What if I was born on February 29?+

In non-leap years, your birthday is treated as February 28 for the purposes of counting a completed year of age. Your actual leap-day anniversary returns every 4 years.
