What this calculator does
This online Chinese zodiac calculator looks up the zodiac animal and element associated with a birth year, based on the repeating 12-animal, 5-element cycle used in Chinese astrology and cultural tradition.
Worked example
A birth year of 1994 corresponds to the Wood Dog year.
Common mistakes
- Using January 1 as the year boundary. The Chinese zodiac year actually starts onChinese New Year (a lunar calendar date), so someone born in early January or early February might technically fall under the previous year's animal.
- Ignoring the element. The animal alone repeats every 12 years, but the combined animal-element pairing (like "Fire Horse") only repeats every 60 years.
- Mixing this up with the Western zodiac. The two systems are unrelated — one is based on birth year, the other on birth month and day.
