What this calculator does

Enter the date you joined a company and this tool finds your next work anniversary, exactly how many full years you've completed, and how many days remain until your next milestone — useful for HR reminders, service awards, or simply tracking your own career timeline.

Worked example

You joined on April 10, 2021. If today is September 2, 2026, you've completed5 years of service, and your next anniversary — 6 years — falls on April 10, 2027, which is 220 days away.

Common mistakes

  • Counting the current partial year as complete. If your anniversary hasn't happened yet this calendar year, your years of service is still last year's count, not this year's.
  • Leap-day joining dates. If you joined on a leap year's February 29, most systems treat February 28 as your anniversary in non-leap years.
  • Ignoring employment gaps. A rehire after a break should use the most recent start date for continuous-service calculations, not the original hire date.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate years of service?+

We count the number of full years that have passed between your joining date and today. If today falls before this year's anniversary date, your years of service is the difference minus one, since that anniversary hasn't happened yet.

What if my joining date was February 29 in a leap year?+

In non-leap years, we treat February 28 as the anniversary date, since February 29 doesn't exist. Your anniversary reverts to February 29 in the next leap year.

Does this account for breaks in employment?+

No — this calculator assumes continuous employment from your joining date. If you had a break in service (for example, a rehire), use your most recent continuous start date for an accurate count.

Why does my anniversary calculator show 0 years of service?+

If your joining date is less than a year ago, you haven't completed your first full year yet, so 0 is correct. Your first work anniversary is exactly one year after your joining date.
