Common mistakes
- Treating the estimate as official. Local mosques and national authorities typically confirm the date only a day or two in advance based on moon sighting.
- Confusing it with Eid al-Adha. The two Eids are separate holidays roughly two and a half months apart, not interchangeable names for the same day.
- Assuming a fixed Gregorian date each year. Like all Hijri calendar dates, Eid al-Fitr shifts about 10-11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar every year.
