What this calculator does
This calculator finds which quarter (Q1-Q4) any date falls in, under either the standard calendar year or a custom fiscal year starting in a different month, along with that quarter's exact start and end dates and how many days remain in it.
Worked example
September 2, 2026 falls in Q3 of the calendar year (July 1 - September 30, 2026). Under a fiscal year starting in April, the same date falls in Q2 of that fiscal year.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every organization uses calendar quarters. Many governments and companies use a fiscal year starting in April, July, or October, shifting quarter boundaries entirely.
- Mixing calendar and fiscal quarter labels. The same date can be "Q3" on the calendar year and a different quarter number on a company's fiscal year — always clarify which system a report uses.
- Forgetting quarters always span exactly 3 months. Regardless of start month, each quarter is 3 consecutive calendar months, just not always aligned to January.
