What this calculator does
This tool counts down to the next U.S. federal individual tax filing deadline, automatically adjusting for weekends, or lets you set any custom tax deadline — for quarterly estimates, state deadlines, or other countries — to track instead.
Worked example
For the 2026 tax year, the standard U.S. filing deadline is April 15, 2027, which falls on a Thursday — no weekend adjustment needed.
Common mistakes
- Assuming April 15 is fixed every year. When April 15 falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day, sometimes pushing it to April 17 or 18.
- Confusing an extension to file with an extension to pay. Filing Form 4868 extends your paperwork deadline to October, but any tax owed is still due on the original date to avoid penalties.
- Missing state-specific deadlines. Some states set different filing deadlines from the federal one — check your state tax authority separately.
